Tips to help you pass
Whether you are nervous, brand new or getting back behind the wheel, a little preparation goes a long way.
If driving makes you anxious
Lots of learners feel this way. Good instructors expect it and slow things down.
- Say you are nervous in the notes box when you book, so your instructor plans a calm first lesson.
- Ask to start on quiet roads and build up to busier ones when you feel ready.
- Breathe out slowly before you move off. It settles your hands and your thinking.
- A few small mistakes do not mean a fail. You can pass the test with up to 15 minor faults.
If you are new to driving
Steady practice beats cramming. Aim for regular lessons and some practice between them.
- You need a provisional licence before your first lesson. Apply on GOV.UK if you have not yet.
- Book lessons once or twice a week, so you keep what you learned last time.
- Pass your theory test early. You need it before you can book your practical test.
- Ask for a mock test before the real one, in the roads around your test centre.
If you are returning to driving
Skills come back quickly, but roads and rules have changed since you last drove.
- Tell your instructor how long it has been, so your first lesson starts at the right level.
- Read the latest Highway Code on GOV.UK. It has changed, including who has priority.
- Switching to automatic or electric? Choose that transmission when you search.
- Retaking your test? Bring your feedback sheet so you can work on the faults you got.
These are general tips, not a promise of a pass. Your instructor knows your driving best, so ask them what to work on next.
